Background of the Study
Neologisms—newly coined words or expressions—are proliferating in Nigerian digital communication, particularly on visual platforms like Instagram. Hashtags on Instagram not only organize content but also serve as vehicles for the creation and dissemination of neologisms. Nigerian users frequently generate innovative lexical items by blending indigenous languages with global influences to capture contemporary experiences and cultural narratives (Adeniyi, 2023). This study assesses digital neologisms by focusing on Instagram hashtags, exploring how they emerge, gain popularity, and influence language change. It examines the morphological and semantic characteristics of these neologisms and investigates the role of visual context in enhancing their meaning. The research situates these digital innovations within broader linguistic theories, demonstrating that Instagram hashtags contribute significantly to evolving language practices in Nigeria. Through content analysis and comparative evaluation, the study provides insights into the dynamic processes of lexical innovation driven by digital media (Okoro, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although digital neologisms are increasingly evident on social media, particularly through Instagram hashtags, systematic research on their formation and impact on language in Nigeria is limited. Current literature often overlooks the influence of visual context on neologism creation. This study aims to address this gap by investigating how Instagram hashtags foster lexical innovation and examining their linguistic characteristics. The lack of empirical analysis hampers our understanding of digital language evolution, necessitating a focused study on the role of neologisms in contemporary Nigerian communication (Chinwe, 2024).

  2. To examine the morphological and semantic features of these neologisms.

This study contributes to our understanding of digital lexical innovation by examining neologisms on Instagram. Its insights are crucial for linguists, digital media researchers, and educators concerned with language evolution in the digital era (Adeniyi, 2023).
